Andrea Baker receives Jefferson Award as “local hero”

Andrea Baker, a longtime Board of Directors member of the Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR), received the Jefferson Award from CBS News Bay Area affiliate KPIX in September 2022 for her work as founder and head of the small business incubator En2Action. The nonprofit operates Ujamaa Kitchen in Hunters Point Shipyard, providing free commercial kitchen space and business development training to food service startups whose owners are Black, indigenous, and people of color.

The KPIX-TV story on the award explains how Andrea reached the decision to make it her mission to help minority entrepreneurs get their start. They quote startup owners: “Feels amazing, it’s like a dream come true…. Andrea lives and breathes to serve,” and “She’s such a leader, even if it’s not her expertise, she knows how to find someone to help with that area. It’s like having another mini business partner.”

STAR congratulates Andrea Baker on this well deserved recognition.
