Je Viens Seul, mixed media on canvas, 48″ x 60″
I’m honored that my large painting was selected for the de Young Open Exhibition, juried by the Bay Area artists and by the Museum curators. The title of this piece, that means” I Come Alone”, is a quotation from the poem ” Le Lac”(The Lake) by Alphonse de Lamartine. The painting was created in multiple layers, with the underpainting done in acrylic and subsequent glazes in oils and velaturas with cold wax medium. This process is similar to the technique of the early Renaissance artists, who often competed the underpainting in water-based tempera and then proceeded with the layers in oil.
When I paint, I embark on a search for the archetypal symbols in nature, with both utopian and dystopian vision in mind. My paintings are imbued with a peaceful and contemplative mood, but also allude to the possible loss of the natural world as we know it.
