Elements of Modernist design fuse with motifs of tribal art in Jeff Long’s paintings. If the history of art, in a broad sense, has much to do with codifying our experience of the natural world, Long finds visual parallels among many cultures and in various time frames.

Worldwide, many societies expressed their place in nature by creating a sort of visual parallel order. This was accomplished by distilling and abstracting landscape and natural elements. Whether expressed in mosaics, weaving, or pottery, there were often uncanny similarities of approach on different continents.

Through artists like Matisse and his many artistic descendents, the visual vocabulary of pattern-making, flattened color and hard edges crossed over into mainstream Western art in the 20th Century from societies in which the tradition of abstracting nature was a long one.In a painting project, which is now in its fifth decade, Long has created a body of work characterized by the distillation of landscape, votive traditions from various cultures, tribal design elements, and Modernist motifs.Long’s art expresses humanity’s impulse to connect the optical sense with a feeling for the wholeness of the world.

Fall Open Studios 2020 will happen at the Hunters Point Shipyard!

Shipyard Artists have welcomed visitors for Open Studios since 1984, and this year will be no exception! While safe in-person visits can be scheduled with individual artists over a 3-week period, we have additional virtual events and options for you!
After our Spring Open Studios had to be canceled in April, we created a new online art gallery and store. where you can purchase the artists' newest creations, opening Friday, Sept 25 at 5PM.

Over 50 participating artists are waiting to communicate with you!

On Friday, Sept 25, 5PM-8PM, our Virtual Store will be open for the first time, and artists will be online and waiting to communicate with you via zoom, email or phone.

On Saturday, Sept 26, 10AM-2PM, you can virtually visit with Shipyard artists who have signed up for ArtSpan's Open Studios .

On Sunday, Sept 27, 11AM-6PM, we will host an interactive Virtual Tour event, where you will be able to zoom into the studios of participating artists just as you would in person during a normal Open Studios event, visit our virtual store and buy direct from artists.

From Sept 25 - Oct 14 our online store will be open. Artists will offer in-person studio visits by appointment, curbside pick-ups of art purchased, and private zoom meetings. Artist contact info and scheduling options will be posted on each artist's page and next to available artworks.

Direct store links will be available from each participating artist's page starting at 5PM on Friday, Sep 25.
