My collages are meant to be intimate and thought provoking. They should evoke a peaceful, quiet and simultaneously compelling response from viewers. One often finds a humorous or unexpected element within the frame.
As a result of living in and traveling extensively throughout Europe, I am greatly influenced by the Dada, Bauhaus, and Wiener Werkstätte movements, as well as Russian Constructivism. I like working with old material – pieces of paper from everyday life such as photographs, letters, and book pages. I find pleasure in gathering old things to savor for later use.
I am honored to have had my work in the de Young Open Exhibit. And to currently have a piece at the Hastings Contemporary in the beautiful UK.
If you are interested in seeing my collages in person, please call me at 415 621-8608 (landline) or email me at Kim@StudioKimSmith.com. (There is an email link on the right.) We’ll find a time for you to visit the Shipyard. Also, there are many unframed pieces available at Inclusions Gallery – 627 Cortland Ave. in Bernal Heights, 94110.
