Maeve Croghan

I begin my oil paintings outside in nature. Actually experiencing and painting at the site is very important for my art. There I can deeply understand the place and it’s environment as I am painting it. I usually find a site that has meaning for me and can convey a specific feeling or concept I have in mind. I am attracted to the way the earth moves and undulates – showing it’s aliveness. Old forms of life; aged trees, old vines and rocks are also intriguing. And the delicate beauty of a wildflower or an open field of grasses can have equal allure. Lately I have been working on a series I call ‘open space’. These paintings share the feeling I have when being out in an open expansive environment.

“This lovely Art Book features a stunning collection of Maeve’s luminescent oil paintings, along with insight on how the magic of Northern Michigan, and the West continually inspire her work. Many of Maeve’s most wonderful paintings are featured. It is quite a spectacular collection of paintings.”

Shipyard Artists have welcomed visitors for Open Studios since 1984, and this year will be no exception! While safe in-person visits can be scheduled with individual artists over a 3-week period, we have additional virtual events and options for you!
After our Spring Open Studios had to be canceled in April, we created a new online art gallery and store. where you can purchase the artists' newest creations, opening Friday, Sept 25 at 5PM.

Over 50 participating artists are waiting to communicate with you!

On Friday, Sept 25, 5PM-8PM, our Virtual Store will be open for the first time, and artists will be online and waiting to communicate with you via zoom, email or phone.

On Saturday, Sept 26, 10AM-2PM, you can virtually visit with Shipyard artists who have signed up for ArtSpan's Open Studios .

On Sunday, Sept 27, 11AM-6PM, we will host an interactive Virtual Tour event, where you will be able to zoom into the studios of participating artists just as you would in person during a normal Open Studios event, visit our virtual store and buy direct from artists.

From Sept 25 - Oct 14 our online store will be open. Artists will offer in-person studio visits by appointment, curbside pick-ups of art purchased, and private zoom meetings. Artist contact info and scheduling options will be posted on each artist's page and next to available artworks.
