News from Hunters Point Shipyard artist Deirdre Weinberg:
August 29 update:
The mural was finished in mid-August; here’s the final photo. Some of the original artists from 1987 worked on the restoration and the whole project was met with great community appreciation and support. There will be an official opening, date TBD.
The original mural had been defaced with graffiti late in 2021, leading to this restoration project. Read and view the ABC7News report on the damage.

I’m happy to be helping restore the historic “Hope for the World Cure” AIDS mural in the Castro in San Francisco. This mural was painted in 1987 and had been tagged and buffed and was very faded. Some of the original artists on this work are gone due to HIV/AIDS but a few are still here and helping with the restoration. We’ve been working since June and are planning to finish by mid-August.
The mural is on the corner of Market St. and Noe St. Visitors and volunteers are welcome!
