Shipyard artist Marc Ellen Hamel announces:
During the month of August, Live Worms Gallery in North Beach, San Francisco, is presenting an exhibit called “TEXTural.” Gallerist Elisabeth Ashcroft has curated this 2nd annual juried exhibition of artworks featuring text as part of the artist’s palette and it’s a good one!
The image you see here is one of my 2 pieces in the exhibit. I created this recently using old wooden letterpress type, treasures that I had picked up at an auction two years ago. I loved the solid size and feel of the letters, the richness of the old well-used wood, and imagining what their history might have been. When I began to experiment with arranging the letters based on shape and color, I also found words in there (mostly backward….can you find the words?). They are arranged and secured into the one of the typesetting drawers that once held the letters……. a fascinating and enjoyable project. I will be at the Opening Reception on August 4 and would love to see you!
NOTE: You can check out an online preview of the exhibit by going to www.livewormsongrant.com, or follow the gallery on Facebook.
