Matematisk

Themes+Projects, Minnesota Street Project, 1275 Minnesota Street Suite 205, San Francisco, CA

Exhibition: March 7th – August 30th, 2020
Gallery Hours: Tuesday- Saturday, 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, by appointment

For our spring 2020 exhibition, Themes+Projects gallery presents Matematisk, new work by Carrie Ann Plank.  This collection of works was initiated during a series of summer artist residencies in Europe and Scandinavia with inspiration stemming from Scandic design as well as the almost unending color and light of the midnight sun season.

Matematisk continues Plank’s focus with visual portrayals of information systems. Fascinated by how principal and equation can be visually rendered, Plank works with multiple layers of data visualization such as: mapping, numerical sequences, fractals, wave patterns, sound sources, magnetic field variations, and other systems of scientific observations. The resulting cacophony of these visual systems,  may be organically or theoretically derived.  The consequent mapping renders a dense, but minimal space, at once contemplative and energized.

Working in multiple mediums including painting, glass work, traditional and experimental printmaking techniques, and mixed media installation, Plank often employs emergent technologies to create matrices to work from, such as CNC routers and laser cutters.  The amalgamation of technological assistance, and traditional hand skills, plays a large role in the work. Many pieces begin as digital rendering, which become the matrix by routing, cutting, or hand carving, while ink is hand mixed by eye and traditionally applied. This results in works that straddle the hand and digital spheres.  Works do not fall easily within a specific realm, but encompass works on paper, mixed media pieces on panel, and site-specific installation pieces.

The de Young Open

The de Young Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
Golden Gate Park, 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, San Francisco, CA

Exhibition: TBD 2020
Gallery Hours: Tuesday- Sunday, 9:30 am – 5:10 pm (Reopening announced soon)

In celebration of the de Young museum’s 125th anniversary, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are hosting The de Young Open, a juried community art exhibition of submissions by artists who live in the nine Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. The de Young Open continues the museum’s long-standing tradition of engaging the local community and showcasing the talent of Bay Area artists, who will be able to offer their pieces for sale and retain 100 percent of the proceeds.

Works of art in The de Young Open will be hung “salon-style,” installed edge to edge and floor to ceiling, which enables a maximum number of works to be displayed. The de Young looks forward to filling the 12,000-square-foot Herbst Exhibition Galleries with 880 artworks by 763 Bay Area artists in The de Young Open.

We are still working with state and local officials to determine our re-opening date, and also the opening date for The de Young Open. To support participating artists, a separate, online platform will also be launched to help facilitate the sales of works.

Hello Dear Friends and Collectors,

While much of this year has been a waiting game to see what will reopen and when, there are some exciting art events happening in a few different forms!

FOURSQUARED 2020 opens tomorrow via a live zoom reception from the gallery (check below for links).  It’s always such a fun show with small very affordable works.  There is also an artist talk you can join me for as well on September 5th.  The gallery is giving small socially distanced tours of the exhibition. Reach out to Arc Gallery and they can set up a viewing appointment.

My solo show, Matematisk, at Themes+Projects in the Minnesota Street Project is still up until the end of the month and I or the gallery team are happy to give safe socially distanced private tours by appointment.

I’m also really excited to announce my selection for The de Young Open!  Exhibition at the museum has a TBD date and I’ll keep you updated when the museum and the exhibition will open. I’m really looking forward to this first of its kind exhibition for the museum.

Lastly, since it’s open studios season, I’m happy to host visits to my studio via Zoom or in person for a small group socially distanced viewing appointment. Just let me know the day and time- I’m there most days!  Just shoot an email to: carrieannplank@gmail.com or (415)425-1419.

Stay safe, sane, and healthy.
Carrie Ann
