Shipyard Artists lead Summer Art Program for Bayview neighborhood kids

artclassOn Monday afternoons in the summer of 2016, 15 kids from the Charles Drew elementary school in the Bayview/Hunters Point neighborhood headed to the Building 101 auditorium for art class. Each week they found a different Shipyard artist prepared to teach them about an aspect of visual art: printmaking, drawing objects from life, bookmaking and paper marbling, and more.

The Shipyard artists’ nonprofit organization STAR is very pleased to have partnered with the Urban Services YMCA, supported by a grant from the Hunters Point Shipyard developer Lennar, to offer this series of five classes. Shipyard artists Carol Jessen, Brian Moore, and Karen Slater coordinated  the project. Other artists who participated were Christina Quiroz, Carolyn Crampton, Elli Shahideh, and Marius Starkey.
